The combination of fish on bread dates back to Ancient Rome, and was continued to be used when the pizza was created in late 18th century Naples. One of the earliest variants of pizza used just anchovy and tomato, due to the cheapness and wide availability of the two ingredients. The pizza has since developed to include other ingredients to complement the existing flavours, such as black olives and capers.
